AI Referral Traffic to Shopify Stores Tripled in Q2

By , Senior AI ConsultantPublished

Shopify says AI search tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity tripled traffic and orders to its merchant stores in the second quarter, helping it beat Wall Street forecasts, even as traditional Google search traffic kept growing too.

Shopify just handed investors a number that cuts against the doom story spreading across the media industry. The company says traffic and orders sent to its merchant stores by AI search tools tripled over the past year, and it credits that shift as one reason revenue climbed 36 percent to 3.6 billion dollars in the quarter, beating what analysts had expected.

That is a strange result if you have been following what AI is doing to news sites and blogs. There, AI answer boxes have been quietly deleting traffic. Independent tracking shows click through rate reductions ranging from 34 percent to 46 percent when an AI summary appears above a search result, and one publisher's desktop click rate dropped by 89 percent once an AI Overview surfaced above its link, with mobile traffic falling nearly as much. Publishers have been surprisingly candid about losing 20 percent, 30 percent and in some cases even as much as 90 percent of their traffic and revenue over the past year.

The difference is what the person actually wants. Someone asking an AI chatbot to explain a topic gets an answer and never needs to click anywhere else, so the website that wrote the original article loses the visit. Someone asking an AI chatbot to find a car seat that fits three across the back seat still has to end up on a real store to pay for it, so the merchant on the other end still gets the visit and the sale.

Shopify says this favors smaller and more specific merchants the most. Three out of every four AI-driven purchases in the quarter came from outside the company's 100 best-selling product categories, meaning niche items that rarely win a normal keyword search are getting surfaced and bought through AI recommendations instead.

None of this is fully settled yet. Shopify's earlier pilot with OpenAI let buyers complete purchases directly inside ChatGPT through a native checkout experience called Instant Checkout, powered by Shopify Payments, but that arrangement has already been reworked once retailers ran into problems with it. Separate research on ChatGPT traffic reaching Walmart, Target and eBay found that when that traffic arrives it converts poorly, and the gap comes down to merchant infrastructure rather than weak shopper demand.

There is also a longer-term risk buried in this good news. Consulting firm BCG has warned that without intervention, retailers risk being reduced to background utilities in agent-controlled marketplaces, where an AI agent quietly picks a winner on the shopper's behalf instead of a person browsing and choosing a brand themselves. At the same time, Adobe Digital Insights found that AI-driven traffic to retail sites surged 693 percent year over year during the 2025 holiday season, with AI-referred visitors converting at higher rates and spending more time on sites than average visitors.

Shopify is positioning itself as the checkout layer that every AI shopping agent has to pass through, having already built connections to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and several other AI tools. For any business selling online, the lesson is not that AI search is safe to ignore. It is that the businesses whose product data is accurate, detailed and easy for a machine to read are the ones AI agents will find and recommend, while everyone else becomes invisible in a shopping conversation they never even knew was happening.
