Backflip AI Cuts Cost of Digitizing Factory Parts to $10

Backflip AI has launched a tool that turns a 3D scan of a physical part into an editable design file for about $10 in a few minutes, replacing a process that used to take days and cost around $1,500, which means factories can rebuild broken parts far faster and finally build digital records of equipment they have never had on file.

Backflip AI, a San Francisco startup, has launched a tool that takes a 3D scan of a physical part and turns it into a real, editable design file, ready to send to a machine shop or a 3D printer. The company says this cuts the cost of digitizing a part from around $1,500 down to about $10, and shrinks the time from hours or days to a handful of minutes.

The problem it targets is bigger than it sounds. Most factories run on parts they do not actually have digital files for. Production lines get built by outside suppliers who keep the original designs, parts go out of production, and plenty of machinery on the floor predates digital design software entirely. When something breaks, someone first has to measure the physical part and rebuild its design from scratch before a replacement can even be ordered. Airbus once had to put more than a hundred engineers on a multi-year project just to recreate digital designs for its own A320, a plane it has built for decades.

This is expensive to ignore. Surveys of automotive plants put the cost of an idle production line at somewhere between $22,000 and $50,000 per minute, depending on the line. A broken part with no design file on hand can turn into hours of guesswork while a line sits dark. A ten dollar, five minute fix removes most of that risk, and it means plants can scan spare parts and tooling ahead of time instead of waiting for something to break.

Backflip is not the first company to attempt scan to design conversion. Tools from established players in this space have offered similar reverse engineering software for years, but they generally still need a trained operator to guide the process by hand. Backflip's pitch is that its underlying AI model does the modeling work itself, learning to build parts the way an engineer would rather than just producing a shape that looks right but cannot be edited or manufactured.

The founders, Greg Mark and David Benhaim, previously built Markforged, a 3D printing company that went public in 2021, which gives them real credibility in manufacturing circles. Backflip raised $30 million in funding led by Andreessen Horowitz and NEA, with backing from Microsoft's chief technology officer and one of Android's co-founders. That is a serious signal that people who understand both hardware and AI think this problem is worth solving.

Worth flagging: Backflip showed similar technology at a trade conference in early 2025, promised a launch, then went quiet for more than a year while the promised software stayed out of reach and even disappeared from its own website. Independent trade coverage this week confirms the tool is genuinely live now, through an add-in for Autodesk Fusion and a standalone web app, with support for other design programs coming later in the year.

The company also frames this as good for workers, not a replacement for them, arguing a technician who never learned design software can now produce a usable file with a scan and a click. That claim comes from Backflip itself and has not been independently tested. What is more certain is who feels the pressure: the small industry of contract shops and freelance drafters who currently charge to do this reverse engineering by hand now have to compete with a ten dollar automated option.
