ChatGPT Will Sell Ads in the Seconds Its Images Take to Draw

By , Senior AI ConsultantPublished

OpenAI is putting picture ads in the wait while ChatGPT makes an image, a way for a costly free feature to pay for itself that will likely spread to other slow AI tasks.

OpenAI is adding a new kind of ad to ChatGPT: a picture ad that appears while the app generates an image. The test starts in October, only in the United States, with a small group of advertisers. The ad is labeled, it is kept apart from the image itself, and OpenAI says it does not change what ChatGPT makes. ChatGPT's shopping and banner ads have appeared under the reply, so this one is different in where it shows up: in the wait, before there is a reply at all.

The wait is what is being sold

A written answer arrives word by word, and you start reading right away. An image gives you nothing to look at but a progress box, so your attention has nowhere to go. An ad placed there interrupts nothing and needs no extra tap from the user.

It is also the moment that costs OpenAI the most. A picture takes far more computing than a paragraph, and that is why OpenAI once rationed it for free users. So the pause is both the expensive part of the product and the moment a user is most likely to be watching the screen.

A request for a picture tells an advertiser more than a search does

Search ads worked because a few typed words show what a person wants right now. An image request shows more, because people describe what they want in a full sentence, with their taste in it.

Take a family planning a kitchen update who asks for sage green cabinets, brass handles and a wooden counter. In one request, that is a paint buyer, a cabinet maker and a countertop installer. ChatGPT's ads are matched to what a user is discussing, and an image request is the most detailed version of that.

It also matters who can buy the moment. The self-serve Ads Manager opened to US advertisers in May with no minimum spend, so once the picture format leaves its test group, a small kitchen fitter could pay to appear when someone describes a kitchen. The same tool that makes the customer's picture can make the fitter's ad images. ChatGPT's ads have also spread beyond the US: they reached India in August, though this picture format is US-only for now.

What it changes if you use ChatGPT at work

Plus, Pro and Enterprise plans do not show ads, so the ad doubles as a price: Plus costs $20 a month, and on it the wait has no ad. That matters most to a team that makes pictures all week. An assistant at a bakery who makes menu images on a free account may watch a rival bakery's ad for a few seconds each time, and for a business that is a reason to pay for the plan.

The larger point reaches past images. Anything an AI takes more than a few seconds to do leaves a gap that someone can buy. As assistants start doing longer jobs for people, such as making video or working through a research task for several minutes, the waiting screen becomes the thing advertisers want. Expect the pause to be sold wherever AI makes you wait.
