Anthropic has combined the two ways of working inside Claude, plain chat and Cowork, into a single interface. Cowork was the mode built for bigger, multi-step jobs, like reading through a folder of work documents and turning them into a report. Chat was for quick back and forth questions. Customers kept getting stuck picking the wrong one, and work started in one mode did not carry over to the other. Now Claude decides on its own what a request needs, and everything, including the Claude Design tool for prototypes and visuals, sits in one window.
The bigger move is the addition of Claude Docs and Claude Slides. You can now ask Claude, in any normal conversation, to draft a document or build a presentation. You can edit it by chatting or by hand, share it with a link the way you would a Google Doc, and let colleagues comment on it. When you are done, you export it as a Word file, a PowerPoint file, or a PDF.
This is a direct answer to a problem Anthropic has had for a while. Its models are widely seen as strong writers and reasoners, but Google and Microsoft each already own a full office suite. Google has spent this year wiring its Gemini assistant directly into Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Microsoft did the same with Copilot inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Claude had no equivalent home for everyday paperwork, so a business could love Claude for thinking and still end up finishing the actual document somewhere else. Docs and Slides remove that last step.
Anthropic has been building toward this for months. It launched Claude Design, a tool for turning prompts into websites and slide decks, back in the spring, and that single launch was enough to knock a noticeable chunk off Figma's stock price in one day. It also merged the memory behind chat and Cowork over the summer, so Claude now remembers your projects and preferences across both. Piece by piece, Anthropic has been turning a chatbot into something closer to a full work app.
There is a financial reason for the pace. Anthropic's revenue has grown at a startling rate this year, most of it from businesses paying for API access and enterprise contracts rather than individual subscribers. The company has also been raising money at a rapid clip and has reportedly filed confidential paperwork for a stock market listing. Sticky, everyday features like document creation make it harder for a paying business customer to leave, which matters a great deal to a company preparing to answer to public shareholders.
For a business already paying for Claude Pro or Max, this update means fewer reasons to also pay for a full Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 seat just to write and format documents. It will not replace heavy spreadsheet work or complex formatting anytime soon, but for memos, one-pagers, and simple slide decks, it is now a real option inside the same subscription. Enterprise customers get 30 days of notice before the change lands, which is enough time to tell staff what is changing and update any internal guides before the old tabs disappear.
