Fifteen years ago, Google introduced the Chromebook as the cheap, simple laptop for a world moving to cloud software. It worked. Chromebooks now account for more than 60% of K-12 education device sales globally, and the same five hardware partners who built them — Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer, and Asus — are now building the Googlebook. The Chromebook era is over, even if Google will not say so directly.
The Googlebook runs on Android, not ChromeOS. That is the key change. ChromeOS was essentially a browser with a keyboard. Android is a full operating system with millions of apps, deep AI integration, and a user base of over 3 billion active devices globally. Moving laptops to Android means the Googlebook is not a stripped-down work device. It is a full computing platform that also happens to be your phone's companion.
The standout hardware feature, called Magic Pointer, puts Google's AI assistant directly on the cursor. You wiggle the mouse, and it reads whatever is on screen — a date in an email, a photo, a document — and offers to do something with it. You point at a meeting time and it drafts an invite. You hover over two images and it blends them. It is a small change that touches every single task you do on a computer.
The cross-app actions are the more important shift for professional users. Gemini can now read what is on your screen and take actions across multiple apps without you switching between them. You show it your grocery list, and it builds your shopping cart. You photograph an event flyer, and it finds the event on a booking site. Google has been testing this on Galaxy S26 and Pixel 10 devices since February, with real users already using it to order food from Uber Eats hands-free. The feature is now expanding broadly across Android 17.
Gemini in Chrome on Android is also getting an auto-browse feature — it can navigate websites and complete tasks like booking a ticket on your behalf. That is not a future promise. It starts rolling out in late June. The form-filling feature, which uses your existing personal data to fill out complex forms automatically, is similarly arriving this summer.
For any business that manages a fleet of devices, this matters. Chromebooks were popular partly because they were simple to control and cheap to replace. Googlebooks are being positioned as premium devices, which means higher unit costs. Google has not announced pricing yet, but its language around "premium craftsmanship and materials" signals a deliberate move upmarket, away from Chromebook's $200 to $400 price range toward MacBook and premium Windows laptop territory.
The Android angle creates a different kind of complication. Chromebooks ran ChromeOS, which IT teams knew how to manage centrally. Googlebooks run Android, which brings a richer app environment but also a broader set of potential security issues and management questions. For procurement managers and IT directors, the question is not whether Googlebooks are better. The question is whether your existing device management tools, security policies, and procurement contracts carry over cleanly — and early signs suggest they largely will not.
For everyday workers, the short-term effect is simpler. AI on your phone is about to do more of the repetitive work — filling forms, browsing on your behalf, moving information between apps — without you asking it step by step. Whether that is a relief or an unease will depend on how much you trust it with your data.
