HP Inc. is a company most people associate with laptops and printers. It operates in more than 180 countries, runs quarterly revenues of around $14 billion, and sells through a partner network of over 100,000 resellers and distributors worldwide. That scale is exactly why what it is doing with AI matters beyond the tech industry.
Since February 2026, HP has been testing OpenAI's enterprise platform, called Frontier. The formal partnership announced this week signals the end of the pilot phase and the start of full deployment. The targets are wide: customer-facing support, partner operations, security, software development, and employee productivity.
Frontier is not a product you can sign up for on a website. It is a controlled platform that OpenAI has been rolling out to a small group of large companies, including Uber, Intuit, State Farm, and Oracle. Pricing is custom and not public, but independent estimates put annual costs for enterprise access at six figures or more. The point of the platform is to let a company run many AI agents at once, across different departments, while keeping a single set of rules about what those agents can see and do.
The distinction matters. Most businesses that have used AI so far have done it in isolated pockets: one team uses a chatbot for customer queries, another uses it to draft documents. Frontier is built to connect those pockets, so that an AI agent handling a partner query can also check inventory, apply discount rules, and log the interaction, all in one flow, without a human passing files between systems.
HP's pilot results are the most interesting part of the story. A security team fixed multiple software vulnerabilities in a day, compared to an estimated month of manual work. HP also claims the security work freed up roughly 82 hours per week of team capacity. One engineer processed 122 separate code reviews across 43 projects in weeks. These numbers come from HP and OpenAI's own account, so they deserve some skepticism, but the specificity makes them harder to dismiss than vague claims about productivity gains.
More than 80% of HP's revenue flows through its partner channel. That is where the company sees the biggest near-term opportunity for AI agents: handling routine partner questions, guiding resellers through program rules, and managing support queries without a human agent on every call. For a network of 100,000 partners spread across the world, the economics are straightforward.
OpenAI's Frontier faces real competition. Microsoft's Agent365 governs AI agents inside the Microsoft 365 environment, which is already embedded in most large companies. Google has its own enterprise agent platform. Salesforce has Agentforce. The meaningful difference with Frontier, at least on paper, is that it claims to manage agents from any provider, not just OpenAI's own models. Whether that openness holds as commercial pressure grows is a fair question.
For anyone running a mid-sized business or a department inside a large one, the HP story carries a practical signal. The companies moving fastest are not the ones experimenting with AI in one corner of the business. They are the ones that started with a small pilot, measured specific outcomes, and used those outcomes to justify broader rollout. The security team's one-day fix versus one-month estimate is the kind of proof point that moves approvals through finance committees.
The gap between large enterprises deploying Frontier-scale systems and smaller businesses using off-the-shelf AI tools is widening. That gap is not permanent, but it is real today. The companies that will close it fastest are the ones already tracking where AI is saving time, even informally, so they have the evidence ready when the right platform becomes affordable and accessible to them.
