OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work today, and it is worth understanding what is actually different here compared to the ChatGPT most people already use.
The ChatGPT people know answers questions. ChatGPT Work takes action. You give it a goal, it breaks the goal into steps, it goes and does the steps, and it hands you something finished. It can work for hours on a complex task without you watching. That is the core shift.
To do this, it connects to the apps you already use: Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs, project management tools. You connect those once, and ChatGPT Work pulls context from whichever ones are relevant to your request. You can also tell it explicitly which app to use by typing the app name in your prompt.
The output is not just a chat reply. It produces finished files: spreadsheets, presentations, Word documents, and now a new feature called Sites, which lets you turn a project into a live web page or dashboard that your team can open from a link and that updates as the underlying information changes.
The real-world examples OpenAI shared are telling. A manager at RingCentral used it to support 50 product managers at once, a job that previously took full human attention for one. An analyst at Virgin Atlantic used it to compress weeks of competitor research into hours. At Zapier, it traced a sales pipeline across multiple tools and surfaced seven figures in potential missed revenue. These are not toy demos: they are workflows that previously required a team of analysts or weeks of manual work.
There is also a Scheduled Tasks feature. You can tell ChatGPT Work to check your Slack every Monday morning, summarize what changed, update a recurring slide deck, and send a report to your team. It runs without you asking again. That moves it from a tool you use into something closer to a standing process.
The context behind this launch matters. OpenAI's own internal data, published last month in a research paper, showed that non-developer usage of its agentic tools has grown at a rate that most companies would find hard to believe. Legal staff at OpenAI generated 13 times more output using these tools in June 2026 than they did seven months earlier. Finance teams ran month-end close in hours instead of days. These are not small efficiency gains.
The competitive picture is also relevant. Microsoft Copilot and Google's Gemini for Workspace both offer AI built into their existing productivity suites. Their advantage is deep integration: Copilot lives inside Word, Excel, and Teams natively. Their limitation is that they are largely confined to their own ecosystems. ChatGPT Work takes a different approach: it tries to sit on top of all of them at once, connecting to Microsoft tools, Google tools, Slack, and third-party apps through a plugin system.
For organizations already paying for Microsoft 365 Copilot at around $30 per user per month on top of their Microsoft licence, the question of whether to also pay for ChatGPT Work is real. The answer depends mostly on how much of your work lives inside Microsoft's world versus spread across multiple platforms.
One thing to watch closely: usage on ChatGPT Work is not a flat per-seat fee. More complex tasks consume more of your plan's allowance. That pricing model makes sense from OpenAI's side, but it means the cost for heavy users can scale up quickly. Enterprise and Edu admins can set spending limits and individual overrides, which is good governance, but it also means IT and finance teams need to plan for usage monitoring, not just a predictable headcount-based line item.
OpenAI is heading toward a public listing that analysts place somewhere between $852 billion and $1 trillion in valuation. ChatGPT Work is the clearest signal yet of how it intends to justify that number: by becoming the productivity layer that sits on top of every other tool in the modern office, not just a smarter search box.
