Roblox launched a feature called Build that lets any user type a sentence and receive a working game back, all inside the mobile app. You describe what you want, the AI handles the environments, characters, sound, and mechanics, and the result is something you can play, adjust, and share. No programming experience needed.
This matters because Roblox is not a niche platform. It has 132 million daily active users, and in the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, revenue jumped 43% year on year to $1.41 billion. The platform paid creators over $1.5 billion last year, with the top 1,000 developers averaging $1.3 million each. That is a real economy, and Build opens the door to it for anyone with a phone.
The testing starts July 28 in New Zealand, open to users aged nine and older who have verified their age. Those aged 16 and up can publish their games to a global audience. There will be a free tier and paid options for power users. A broader rollout across more countries follows in the coming months.
The harder question is what happens when millions of people start generating games they did not really design. This is not theoretical: the same pattern played out in the App Store when AI coding tools drove an 84% spike in new submissions in a single quarter, stretching Apple's review times from 24 hours to as many as 30 days, and forcing Apple to start pulling some AI-generation tools from its store entirely. Roblox is walking into a known problem.
Roblox's answer is its discovery algorithm. Games that people do not return to simply do not get shown. The platform already runs this way for human-made games, and the same standard will apply to AI-generated ones. As Roblox put it, if no one plays it, no one can find it. Whether an algorithm can reliably separate genuinely enjoyable AI-assisted games from forgettable ones at massive scale is an open question.
Sentiment in the professional game development world is notably negative. According to the 2026 Game Developers Conference survey, 52% of game industry professionals believe generative AI is having a negative effect on the industry, up from 30% the year before and just 18% the year before that. Among artists and programmers, those numbers are higher still. The concern is not purely about quality: it is about competition and jobs.
For established Roblox creators, Build is a double-edged tool. It can help them prototype ideas faster, but it also means every player is now a potential competitor. The creator earnings data tells an important story here: about 85% of Roblox developers earn under $100 a month, while the top fraction earns millions. The economics on the platform are already heavily concentrated at the top. More supply of games does not automatically mean more earnings spread around.
Roblox is also building AI agents that will help creators playtest games, identify bugs, and analyze engagement data, with those tools expected to launch in the coming months. The longer-term vision, which the company has been working toward since it released its own AI model for 3D object generation, is that a creator describes a game and the AI builds most of it.
The parallel to watch across every industry is this: when a skill that once took years to learn can be replicated in seconds by a text prompt, two things happen simultaneously. More people can participate, and the floor for what counts as acceptable output rises sharply, because the volume of options grows much faster than people's time to evaluate them. Roblox's bet is that player retention is the right filter. It may well be right. But the platform is about to find out at a scale no one has tested before.
