ChatGPT Answers Now Recalculate When a Number Changes

By , Senior AI ConsultantPublished

ChatGPT now builds a working calculator or diagram for many questions, so an answer becomes something you can test with your own numbers, the way spreadsheets changed what-if questions.

OpenAI has started rolling out a ChatGPT update in which the new GPT-6 model builds the screen for each answer. Depending on the question, that can be a calculator, a map, a diagram with buttons to tap, or plain text when text is best. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users get it first and Free and Go users a day later, and a company's admins decide whether it is on for Enterprise. Anyone who finds it too busy can ask ChatGPT for fewer visuals.

Not the first, but the widest

Other assistants got there earlier. Google's search has built custom interactive tools since November 2025 and added them to AI Overviews in August. Claude began drawing interactive charts inside the chat in March. ChatGPT itself added moving visuals in March too, but only for about 70 core math and science ideas.

What changed now is that GPT-6 composes the screen for everyday questions in general, for the more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week. It does this by choosing from a library of ready-made parts, such as buttons, charts and forms, and arranging them as it writes, so the screen builds up while the answer is still coming. For most of those people, this will be the first time an answer arrives as something they can operate.

The blackboard that someone still had to build

VisiCalc sold more than 100,000 copies within months and showed small businesses what a personal computer was for. But someone still had to build each sheet: choose the rows, write the formulas, check them. A chat can now do that step from one sentence.

For example, a warehouse shift manager could type: compare paying overtime with hiring temporary staff for the three busy weeks before the holidays. What comes back is a small tool with hourly rates, headcount and weekly hours as sliders, and the cost of each option changing as she moves them. She is no longer picking a number out of a paragraph. She is finding the point where overtime stops being the cheaper choice. A sheet like that takes most people half an hour to set up, and this takes a sentence and a minute.

When a tool like that is worth keeping, ChatGPT can already build and host small websites, so a calculator that starts as an answer could end up as something your whole team uses.

What happens to the calculator pages

A large part of the web is made of calculator and comparison pages for mortgages, taxes, loans, currencies and splitting a bill. Companies built them because people searching for an answer would land on them. When the answer in the chat is already a calculator, set to the person's own numbers, that visit never happens.

I expect these generic pages to lose much of their traffic over the next few years. The ones that last will hold something a chat cannot make up: a bank's live rates, a shop's real stock, a quote you can accept. If your business uses a free calculator to bring in customers, the calculator is no longer the draw, and your real prices and availability are.

One habit is worth starting. A calculator on an established website has usually been tested by the people who run it, while the one ChatGPT builds for you has been checked by no one but you. Before you rely on it for money, type in a case where you already know the right answer and see whether it agrees.
